We would all love a healthy and toned body but the road to success can sometimes be long and difficult. A good fitness coach can help you develop a strategy for completing this journey. We met with Jean Christophe, a dedicated coach at L’Usine Opéra, a chic sports club, which is highly regarded by Parisians and tourists. Jean believes a positive mind-set can help you achieve your ultimate performance, and be the best you can be.

What coaching tips can you give for achieving your goals?
It’s all about being patient and consistent. Sometimes even though we try really hard, the results can be disappointing. When this happens, it’s important to be patient and understand that your progress will not always be a continuous curve. For weight loss or weight gain, your progress can stagnate for three weeks and then suddenly improve. Your fitness coach is the voice of encouragement you need to keep going and help you to analyse your achievements. It’s common for people to drop out after three months right at the moment when results generally start to appear.

And conversely what are the potential obstacles to success?
A stressful personal or professional environment, health problems, and fatigue can put a damper on motivation. In these instances, it might be better to do more low-key activities until you have re-established a better balance. A good coach must be able to adapt to these circumstances.

What are some good habits you should get into before starting a training session?
You should leave your phone in the locker room. Think of your session as an opportunity to have a proper break. Make sure you warm up for a few minutes, then start slowly and increase your speed gradually.
And what about after the session?
You should adjust what you do depending on how intense your training session was. If you have not sweated too much, a small sauna session is a good idea. It helps you to relax and drain toxins. You could then finish with a cold shower to improve circulation.

However, if you have sweated a lot during your training session, I recommend avoiding the sauna and opting for a shower at body temperature instead, around ten minutes after you’ve finished working out.

How does it work if you want to try a training session at L’Usine Opéra?

We have a cardio and weight-training area, a cycling studio, collective yoga classes, a sauna and much more besides.
